Laura Letchinger Art Exhibit with Nonprofit Piece by Piece in Los Angeles

About the show

In addition to exhibiting recent paintings in person, this show was largely about connecting with other artists in support of vital, healing work with low income and formerly homeless residents of Skid Row and South Los Angeles. I first learned about arts nonprofit Piece by Piece back in January while attending an Into Action event called "Creative Renewal: Arts + Homeless Crisis". Leigh Adams, professional mosaic artist and Piece by Piece instructor, was on the discussion panel. As I began planning this show, I realized I had an opportunity to help widen the collector base for the stunning works created by this hugely talented and compassionate community, and to direct attention to their current "Big Art, Big Impact" commissions campaign. I was thrilled when they accepted my invitation to be my special guest.

My personal painting process involves connection with creative energy on a moment-to-moment basis without a known end and with an enthusiasm for experimentation and change. Many paintings come to be on a very winding road. With the right supplies, tenacity and patience, these types of journeys develop depth and strength and ultimately yield unique and gratifying results. The parallel I see is that sustainable human evolution stems from compassionate actions that nurture those on winding roads, and on roads that are simply different than our own. Those actions have a domino effect, cultivating authentic connection and dissolving fear and misguided competition. Free of that, we are likely to prioritize our shared humanity.

10% of painting sales during the show was donated to Piece by Piece, who also retained 100% of their mosaic sales.

Piece by Piece artisan, John: "Broken pieces of glass, like memories in one’s mind are intrinsically worthless. They become valuable only when recombined into something useful. I am gleefully reassembling the shattered fragments of my yesterday’s good life, transforming them into new and beautiful, real and touchable treasures."

Castelli Art Space

Excerpt from LA WEEKLY | "West Adams is L.A.'s New Gallery Row" |  | AUGUST 3, 2018

"A master framer's shop beloved by L.A. artists for decades, last year Castelli Art Space renovated a big, gorgeous industrial space on its property into a first-rate gallery. On the eastern edge of Culver City, or the western edge of West Adams (depending on who's asking), Castelli hosts a robust and eclectic program of curated shows, hosted pop-ups and special events featuring some of the city's most popular independent artists and organizers."  www.castelliartspace.com
